1.1 Scope
(1) EN 1991-1-1 provides guidance and loads for the design of structural members in buildings and structures including certain geotechnical aspects within the following areas:
— Weight of construction materials and stored materials;
— Dead load of building structures;
— Service loads in buildings.
(2) Chapter 4 and Appendix A specify nominal values of weights for individual construction materials, bridge materials, and stored materials. Additionally, the angle of repose is specified for some materials.
(3) Chapter 5 specifies methods for determining characteristic values of dead load of building structures.
(4) Chapter 6 specifies characteristic values of service loads on beams and roofs in buildings depending on their use, such as:
— Beams in apartment buildings and communal-, commercial- and office rooms;
— Beams in garages and spaces with vehicle traffic;
— Beams in industrial and storage rooms;
— Roofs;
— Helicopter landing pads.
(5) The loads specified in Chapter 6 for spaces with vehicle traffic apply to vehicles up to a gross weight of 160 kN. For structural design of spaces with heavy vehicle traffic with a gross weight greater than 160 kN, an agreement with the competent authority is required. Further information can be obtained from EN 1991-2.
(6) For barriers or walls that function as barriers, horizontal forces are specified in Chapter 6. Appendix B provides additional guidance for vehicle barriers in parking spaces.
NOTE Forces caused by skidding of vehicles are described in EN 1991-1-7 and EN 1991-2.
(7) For design situations and load effects in silos and tanks caused by water or other materials, see EN 1991-4.
